Stephen Hawking on TV Tonight

This is a reminder that tonight, on the Discovery channel at 8:00 PM (Eastern), you can see Did God Create the Universe?, featuring Stephen Hawking.

We probably wouldn’t know about this if it were not for the neo-theocrats at the Discovery Institute‘s creationist public relations and lobbying operation, the Center for Science and Culture (a/k/a the Discoveroids, a/k/a the cdesign proponentsists).

You will recall our recent post, Klinghoffer v. Stephen Hawking, in which it was abundantly clear that the Discoveroids have utter contempt for Hawking. That alone is a glowing recommendation for tonight’s show, and a superb reason for all rational people everywhere to watch it.

Speaking of the Discoveroids (who are not connected in any way to the Discovery channel), they’ve just posted yet another reminder about the Hawking show: Thought for the Day from Stephen Hawking. It’s very brief. They quote from a review — Warning, they’re creationists, and we haven’t verified their quote! — which they claim says:

In one of several leaps that most of us will agree to accept rather than understand, he says that the universe contains as much negative energy as positive energy, and thus, it adds up to nothing, so the mass or energy didn’t need to come from somewhere else.

Whoa! Hawking says that something can come from nothing. Egad — that contradicts the wisdom of Ray Comfort (see: Food Fight: Ray Comfort v. Stephen Hawking).

In response to that report about Hawking’s message, the Discoveroids sneer, with bold font added by us:

Yes, because it comes from the Oracle, most of us will just accept this, like steers that accept their place in the line to the slaughterhouse.

Lovely analogy! Let’s read on:

Others will insist that just because someone is a famous physicist, he doesn’t get a free pass when he says something that is self-evidently absurd.

“Self-evidently absurd”? It must be, because both Ray Comfort and the Discoveroids say so. Hey — we’ve learned something from this: Comfort’s creationist babbling is the Discoveroids’ theological doctrine. Here’s the last of the Discoveroid post:

Hawking is a living master of this.

Yes. According to the Discoveroids, Hawking is a “living master” of the self-evidently absurd.

In case you’re not aware of it, Hawking is one of those satanic scientists on the National Center for Science Education’s List of Steves who support the theory of evolution. NCSE wrote about it back in 2003: Hawking is Steve #300.

We thank the Discoveroids for their timely reminder that Hawking is on TV tonight. Check your local listings for the right time. And here’s some Curmudgeonly advice: As you watch the show, your enjoyment will be greatly enhanced if you imagine the shrieks and wailing that will be coming from Discoveroid headquarters in Seattle.
