The Chicago blizzard will continue piercing gust of snow in the area until Wednesday morning. And the worst is yet to come. Between 9 p.m. today and 5 a.m. Wednesday, the snowfall rate could be 3 to 4 inches per hour. But the real hazard was the wind, which was gusting at 40-50 mph, according to Chicago WGN.

Meanwhile, Lake Shore Drive was shut down as of 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, due to safety concerns over the Chicago blizzard, according to the Chicago city’s Officials. As of about 9 p.m., traffic was still stuck on Lake Shore Drive. A No. 146 CTA bus has been stuck on Lake Shore Drive for more than 3 1/2 hours, unable to make it to the Belmont exit. The bus was packed with people standing, and twice the engine shut down and the lights went out. The wind keeps blowing the back door open, as Chicago Tribune reports. People inside the bus seemed to be in good spirits, but everyone is tired and have been told nothing about when the bus will be able to move again.
Here are some winter safety tips for all affected by worst Chicago blizzard 2011.
1. Prepare yourself—Avoid being outside if possible. Dress warmly and wear layers of clothes. Bring pets indoors.
2. Prepare your home—Keep water lines dripping, insulate outside water faucets, have plenty of blankets should power go out. If using a generator, make sure you vent the exhaust and never use charcoal indoors. Vapors are deadly.
3. Prepare your vehicle—Check the antifreeze level, windshield wipers and have full tank of gas. Always have a heavy coat, hat, gloves and shoes for walking in case your vehicle gets stranded. Keep an emergency kit on board with first aid materials, bottles of water and snack foods.
