Oprah's Audience Gets 2012 Volkswagen Beetle
Everyone remembers the time Oprah Winfrey gave a Pontiac G6 to each audience member on her day time talk show. That was six years ago, and people still talk about it. It looks like Oprah outdid herself this week.“During today’s Part Two of Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things show,” says Mother Proof, “Oprah and Santa gave everyone in the audience keys to their own 2012 Volkswagen New Beetle.”
No one will deny that free cars -- especially free ones that aren’t on the market yet -- are super cool, but there is one downside. No one got to see what it looks like. “Volkswagen isn’t revealing what the newer New Beetle looks like. The ‘Oprah’ audience was allowed to see only a silhouette of the car and Ms. Winfrey’s reaction to the design (in a video clip showing her as she saw the car for the first time),” the New York Times explains.
That means there are no photos on Volkswagens website, no specifications and no features list. Volkswagen, however, did hold a press conference about the giveaways. “Jonathan Browning, chief executive of VW North America, explained that Oprah had approached the company and said ‘the Beetle was one of her favorite things,’” the New York Times elaborates. “Mr. Browning added that the Beetle would come with a TDI engine option, which would also be offered on the Beetle Cabriolet. He revealed few other details, other than calling the car ‘sporty’ and ‘sleek.’”
Even though Oprah’s audience and the public don’t know much about the newest new VW Beetle that’ll hit the market in May of next year, audience members did luck out this time. Bloomberg says they won’t have to pay the $7,000 in taxes and fees. VW is paying the bills.
