Mafia Used Sinatra and Monroe in A Plot to Smear Kennedys

The intention was to work through "associates" of the two stars to lure the Kennedys, as well as Peter Lawford, their British actor brother-in-law and fellow member of Sinatra's "rat pack", into actions they would regret.

Papers released in the US yesterday contained reports of a rumour from an informant suggesting elements of the mob wanted smear the men. An FBI statement accompanying the released of the papers said: "[The file] contains report of a rumour from an informant suggesting that elements of the Mafia wanted attack the character of Edward and Robert Kennedy and their brother-in-law Peter Lawford by working through associates of Frank Sinatra to compromise them at a New York party. Both Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe were to be involved."

After looking into the claims, the FBI is said to have decided the information was not "solid" enough and no other mention of it appears. The plot is thought to have fizzled out, but it is consistent with other accounts of the extraordinary links between America's greatest political dynasty, the country's biggest stars and organised crime.

Monroe, who died in 1962, allegedly had affairs with both Bobby Kennedy and John F Kennedy, the former president who was assassinated in 1963. It has previously been claimed that she passed on pillow talk from Bobby Kennedy to Sinatra who in turn passed them on to his mafia friends.

Joseph Kennedy, the family patriarch, allegedly made much of the family fortune through his connections with organised crime, while the CIA under President Kennedy was rumoured to have explored ways of killing Cuban leader Fidel Castro with the mafia's help. However as attorney general Robert Kennedy launched several investigations into the mob which it may have felt warranted a measure of retribution.

From early on in his four-decade career in the senate, Edward Kennedy, the youngest of the three brothers, was known for his affairs with women and extravagant drinking habits. Papers released earlier this year the library of former president Richard Nixon showed that in the early 1970s he discussed with the aides the possibility of discrediting Kennedy by leaking news of his infidelities.

Agents in Milwaukee took the information from an unidentified source "who had furnished reliable information in the past," according to the memo. However, the informant could not verify the truth of any of the rumor's details.

"This is allegedly to be accomplished by working with outfit associates of Frank Sinatra to arrange for their women to be placed in compromising situations in the presence of any or all of the two Kennedys and Peter Lawford," the Aug. 3, 1965, memo stated.

The FBI files include a one-page document generated about the same time that talks about sex parties at the Hotel Carlyle in New York City. Among those mentioned as participants were the Kennedy brothers along with Lawford, Sinatra, Monroe and entertainer Sammy Davis Jr.

The 2,352 pages of FBI documents dated from 1961 to 1985 and released under a freedom of information request, showed the late senator suffered a steady flow of death threats even after his last bid at the presidency failed in 1980.

They showed that Sirhan Sirhan, the man who shot Robert Kennedy dead in 1968, tried to recruit a fellow prisoner who was about to be released to kill Edward, offering him "a million dollars and a car". .

Death threats originated from multiple sources, including individuals, anonymous persons, and members of radical groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, "Minutemen" organisations, and the National Socialist White People's Party.

They files also included letters from self-proclaimed psychics saying they wanted to meet the senator to tell him when he was going to die. He finally died in August 2009 at the age of 77 after suffering from brain cancer.

The release of the documents had been highly anticipated by historians, scholars and others interested in the life and long public career of one of America's most prominent and powerful politicians.

The files also showed that the FBI did not investigate Kennedy's car crash on Chappaquidick Island off the coast of Massachusetts. It however knew about the incident immediately and colluded in initially keeping his identity secret.
His 19-year-old passenger Mary Jo Kopechne drowned in the incident, which effectively ended his presidential ambitions. In his memoir, "True Compass," Kennedy wrote that his actions on Chappaquiddick were "inexcusable".
